History of Mountain Springs Church

Steve and Liz Holt served for ten years with Campus Crusade for Christ, most of that time in Tokyo and Okinawa, Japan. God began speaking to them about planting a church in Colorado Springs as early as 1991 through a dream God gave Liz. As they waited on the Lord for clearer direction, Steve completed a Master’s Degree from Fuller Theological Seminary, directed a Bible Institute in southern California, and acted as a church consultant on world missions.
After many more clear leadings from the Holy Spirit, Steve and Liz moved in 1994 to Colorado Springs, Colorado. That fall, they began gathering in their living room for ten days of fasting and prayer to seek God for the starting and establishing of a new church. During that time, God led five other couples to join them. This small group soon grew to a size their house could no longer handle, and they moved to a library.
After a few months, the growing fellowship moved to Pioneer Elementary School in Briargate.
On June 4, 1995, with seventy-five adults and children in attendance, the first official Sunday church service was held. Over the next year, the congregation grew to over 200 and by February 1997, the congregation moved to a store front at Montebello and Academy. God continued to bless MSC and soon packed out the facility with more than 500 members.
Through a set of supernatural circumstances in 2002, God blessed MSC with nearly 20 acres of land on the northeast side of Colorado Springs. In July, 2002, we completed our first ministry center located at 7345 Woodmen Road. Since then, God has visited our fellowship with a mighty outpouring of His Spirit. With over 2,000 people coming to know Christ in our first three years in our current facility, the church has grown to over 3,500 active members.
Over these first 10 years, MSC has planted 13 other churches in the U.S. and around the world. MSC has given over $2 million to missions.
Ministries at Mountain Springs have grown with the reputation of being some of the most powerful in Colorado Springs including AWANA, the largest in the state of Colorado, for children and youth (Sunday 3 - 5 p.m.), children’s ministry on the weekends, Men’s Saturday Breakfasts (first Saturday of every month), MOPS for mothers of young children (Wednesday 9 - 11 a.m.), and our Vacation Bible School in the summer.
In 2005, Pastor Steve, led by the Holy Spirit, established Word and Spirit Churches International. This new movement has grown to include churches and para-church ministries in the U.S., mainland Japan, Okinawa, and Uganda, Africa. The Word and Spirit Leadership Institute was established to train and equip people for leadership and church planting.
During the spring of 2005, we completed an addition for youth and adult education, called The Summit Center.
More recently we completed a new 1,100 seat sanctuary, new office space, and a more spacious children’s ministry center.
